Small Steps to Navigate to Big Destinations 3

small step Feb 2010 postSometimes we feel like we have to take a big leap and we end up stuck in fear and never even leave home to move toward our destination.  Try taking a few small steps in the direction you want to go and then let the momentum carry you forward.

Destination

Your GPS will not work if you don’t know the destination.  Get a clear picture in your mind of the end result and then imagine how it will feel when you are there.  If you decide later that this is not the place you want to go then you can enter a different destination; but be clear on the result so that your GPS will work!

Small Steps

Don’t feel like you have to map out the entire route to your destination.  Brainstorm some small steps you can take with your coach or a trusted friend.  Try a couple things and see where they take you.  Make adjustments as needed and celebrate your progress.  Keep moving forward and enjoy the journey!

Innovation

My inspiration for this post came from a post I read at HBR on using small steps for better innovation, see the link for taking small steps toward more innovation.

How have you used small steps to navigate to big destinations? Please share in a comment.

Great Blog! I had a huge project at work–it took me a year to finish. I broke it down into manageable steps and just started. You’re right, the momentum carried me forward and as I kept doing little steps I moved towards the finish.
I like the shorter size of your message today. It gives me more time to enjoy it and maybe browse through your past posts. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks Brenda! I’m glad you liked it and thanks for sharing your perfect example. I’m glad you enjoyed the shorter post too; we all have a lot to do and the succinct message is sometimes the best. Paula
